“Legionella Risks Associated with Changes in Building Usage Due to COVID-19”

Legionella pneumophila is the number one cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States, and the ongoing pandemic has the potential to further increase Legionella risk. As stated by the NSF, “Prolonged closures or low occupancies of industrial, commercial, educational and other types of facilities increase the risk of pathogen growth such as Legionella within building water systems.” Health departments, utilities, and academics have all created guidance documents to help building owners address the risk, but providing guidance that is both simple enough to follow and effective for all buildings has been challenging. This session will provide concrete recommendations to environmental laboratories to engage with building owners and other stakeholders to reduce the public health risk posed by the intersection of COVID-19 and Legionella pneumophila.

Presenter: Jeff Bates – Product Manager for IDEXX Water’s Building Water Testing Solutions

Jeff Bates is the Product Manager for IDEXX Water’s Building Water Testing Solutions, which include fast, easy, and accurate tests for Legionella pneumophila and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Since joining IDEXX Jeff has focused on the public health challenges associated with premise plumbing systems, especially in light of recent changes in building usage. Jeff has a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Middlebury College and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.
